Alibaba International vs. 1688: Stop Confusing the Two Platforms

A Buyer Finds a Supplier. The Price Is Good. Then Customs Calls.

A UK buyer finds a supplier on a platform with the Alibaba logo. The unit price is half of what they have seen elsewhere. The supplier replies fast. The buyer places an order. The payment goes through. Everything feels fine.

Then the container hits customs. The supplier cannot produce export documentation — because they never had an export license. They quote in RMB because they only sell domestically. They have no idea what FOB means. They cannot issue a commercial invoice that clears European customs. The shipment is stuck. Storage fees pile up. The supplier’s final response: “We have never shipped outside China before.”

What happened: the buyer was on 1688.com — Alibaba’s domestic Chinese wholesale platform — and assumed it was the same as Alibaba International (alibaba.com). They share a logo. They do not share a purpose.

Language and communication. 1688 = entirely in Chinese. If you cannot read and negotiate in Chinese, you are not operating independently on this platform. Alibaba.com has over 200,000 sellers. Many opened an international store without the operational capability to back it up. They look professional. They may not be able to deliver.

How to tell the difference before you place an order.

Verify their real export license — not platform badges. A legitimate exporter has import/export rights registered with China’s Ministry of Commerce and customs filing with China Customs. Ask for both. A supplier who cannot confirm these immediately is not an exporter. They are a domestic factory with an international storefront. Do not let a Gold Supplier badge replace this check.

Test their trade knowledge. Ask for FOB and CIF pricing. Ask which documents they provide for customs clearance. Ask about your destination country’s import requirements. A supplier who only talks about price and MOQ has never shipped internationally. A supplier who can answer without pausing has done this before.

Ignore the store design. A beautiful English store page means they hired a good designer. It does not mean they can export. The store is marketing. The export license is reality.

Look at their actual order history. Consistent overseas orders over years, not one or two transactions. High on-time delivery rate. Low dispute ratio. If their store has been active for three years but has almost no cross-border transaction history, they are not an international supplier. They are a domestic one waiting for someone who does not check.
